LECTURE - KATE BRINDLEY & CHARLES NOBLE
THURSDAY 15TH NOVEMBER, 7.30PM
Join Kate Brindley (Director of Exhibitions, Chatsworth House) and Charles Noble (Curator, Fine Art, Chatsworth), for a talk drawing on recently discovered correspondence documenting changes to the fabric of Lismore Castle, aided by the use of early photography.
In 1844 the 6th Duke of Devonshire came to Lismore with Joseph Paxton and made plans for an ambitious remodelling of the castle. They decided to record the remodelling, initially with watercolourist Samuel Cook, who made beautiful illustrations of the castle and surrounding views, and later with photographs by Francis Edmund Currey, a pioneer in amateur photography.
Using correspondence from the 6th Duke as well as extensive and beautiful watercolours and photographs, this talk provides a unique insight into a major development in Lismore Castle’s history, as well as charting the change from watercolours to photography as a means of social documentary.
